What is a cookie?

Today cookies are used in connection with practically all websites. In many cases they are necessary for supplying services on the website.

A cookie is small text file that is stored on the user’s IT equipment (PC, tablet, smartphone etc.), allowing the device to be recognized. Cookies can, for example,  be used to compile statistics regarding the user’s use of the website an to optimize its content. A cookie is a passive file and cannot be used to gather information from the use’s computer or to spread computer viruses or other harmful programs.  Some cookies are stored by other parties (third parties) than the one on URL in the browser. This can be general content but also, for example, analytical tools or embedded comment boxes. This means that cookies are saved from parties other than those that own the website. Some cookies are only stored on the user’s IT equipment as longer as the browser is open (sessions cookies), while others are stored for a longer period of time (persistent cookies). When the user visits a website again, sessions cookies will be reactivated while persistent cookies are usually renewed.
