  • 20 October 2007 awarded Honorary Doctorate (fil.dr. h.c.) at the Philosophical Faculty, University of Göteborg (Sweden).
  • External Professor of Early Scandinavian Studies at the University of Aberdeen from 1 August 2007.
  • External lecturer in Medieval History, Department of History, University of Copenhagen, October 2001-June 2002.
  • Assistant Professor in Medieval History, Department of History, University of Copenhagen, August 1997 - September 2001 (on leave from the Danish National Archives).
  • On research leave for a project relating to the effects of the Black Death on society in the castellany of Maurienne (Savoy, France), May-July 1985 and September 1993-August 1995.
