Filming Centre

Backup filming, dispersal of copies and digitalisation are keywords for the activities of the State Archives Filming Centre.

The State Archives Filming Centre is located at Viborg at the same premises as the Provincial Archives of Northern Jutland.

The Filming Centre is in charge of the development of electronic accessibility of records following scanning from microfilm and microfiches or directly from records.

The Filming Centre, furthermore, conducts backup filming and sale of microfilm and microfiches.

Filming and preservation

Backup filming on microfilm is the main method used to preserve records for the future. First of all, this reduces the wear and tear on the most frequently used records. Secondly, some of the expensive and slow conservation processes may be avoided. For many records, current conservation treatment is absolutely essential just to ensure that they are in a state that allows them to be used at all.

Using state-of-the-art cameras and equipment for developing, copying and testing film, the Filming Centre primarily produces backup film in the form of 16 mm and 35 mm microfilm rolls as well as microfiches. Another objective of the Filming Centre is for the film produced to comply with international quality requirements in terms of homogeneity, durability and usage.

Dispersal of copies

Another important task is dispersal of copies. Local history archives and private individuals may purchase copies of microfilm and microcards, as well as ordering filming of records which have not been microfilmed previously. Orders may be placed with the Filming Centre, irrespective of which Archive is currently storing the original records.

The Filming Centre is, furthermore, in charge of the distribution of microfiches and microfilm to the Reading Rooms of the State Archives and for the preparation and publishing of catalogues of the Centre's products in cooperation with the various Archives.
