The Danish Data Archive (DDA) may, due to its international network, distribute Danish research data to foreign databases and forward data to researchers and other users all over the world. Likewise, Danish users are able to access foreign research databases thanks to DDA's membership in international organisations and councils.
Individual data archives operate under a variety of national regulations, and it has been problematic to establish agreements with data owners about the distribution of data between countries. However, by participating in cross-nationally managed and financed projects, data archives have achieved global access to data quite freely, without jeopardising data security.
Using the Internet, researchers and data users have achieved access to important local, regional and international research data by a few simple mouse clicks. Future developments depend very much on continuous exchange of experience among individual data archives.
